Goal II:
Systems & Services

Students understand the systems and technologies that facilitate the management and use of information resources to serve the diverse needs of users.

II.a Students identify and analyze diverse information needs of individuals and communities.

LIS5268 Microcomputers - Research paper "Social Media, Fake News and Misinformation." This paper investigates the growth of social media as a source of news, as well as the identification of fake news and the part social media platforms play in circulating misinformation. Teaching information literacy to students (and adults!) is a crucial part of librarianship today and is more urgently needed now than ever before.

II.b. Students evaluate and select print and digital information resources and systems to meet needs of users.

LIS6511 - Collection Development Group Project - Collection Development Policy

Our group created a Collection Development Policy for the (fictional) Green Apple County Public Library system, a mid-sized library system based on a mashup of Orange County, FL and Green Bay, WI. We detailed how resources would be chosen and outlined how we would better serve our foreign-language patrons with increased focus on Spanish-language resources.

LIS 5020 - Foundations of Library and Information Science - Intellectual Freedom and Banned Books Briefing Note

This subject has become even more relevant as many librarians (including those in Florida) are facing a drastic increase in book challenges and restrictive laws regarding books and materials for schools and public libraries.

II.c. Students understand and use appropriate information technology for information services.

LIS6303 Preparing Instructional Media - Instructional Design Digital Media Video

This project was extremely challenging because I had to teach myself how to create and edit videos in Adobe Premiere Rush and find and add a soundtrack during an abbreviated Summer semester. It was really gratifying to see the finished product posted on YouTube, (another first!) and I felt really accomplished having learned how to use several digital tools and create original work in such a short time. My instructional problem was to draw community members to my library's new garden by offering a Summer Veggie Program to help them learn to plant and tend their own edible crops. I learned how to use Canva, a popular tool among librarians, and used it to create a brochure for my proposed Summer Veggie Program
